What is Visualization and How Does It Work?

In one form or another, most of us have heard or used the words “Picture this…” or “Imagine that….”  What we’re really talking about when we say or hear these things is visualization. We’re saying to look inside, to create a mental image, to see something with your mind’s eye.  This is the starting point on a successful life journey: creating a vision.

The beauty of this technique, as is the case with everything you’ll learn from L.I.F.E. and me, is that it is scientifically based.  Research has revealed that the brain doesn’t distinguish between what’s real and what’s imagined. Think of your monster under the bed.

You responded, in both emotion and action, to the image of something terrifying with intent to harm you. This is highly effective, because if your brain believes it, your body follows, and both parts of you cooperate to achieve your goals.

This is exactly how most professional athletes prepare for a game⎯they see it in their minds and then perform on the playing field what they envisioned. Like them, we’re going to learn to imagine our goals in clear, vivid mental pictures and accompany these images with intense emotional charges.

Think of it this way: the images are the moving pictures, and the emotional accompaniment is the musical score. The two work together to bring your vision into reality!

As you visualize your goals, enjoy the process. Get back to that daydreaming kid again who knew how to use imagination and have fun with it.  Making visualization a habit is important because when you do this, you are constantly creating (and soon maintaining!) the YOU that you want to be.

Start by seeing yourself as that person NOW. The unconscious thinks in present tense, so imagine you are living this reality right NOW! And be sure to make visualizing a habit and part of your daily routine.

I made the mistake of forgetting the power of the childlike imagination that allowed me to defeat Bernard, but was soon reminded when I faced another monster.
